Can a Lab-Grown Diamond Be an Heirloom? I Think So.

Can A Lab-Grown Diamond Be An Heirloom? I Think So.

Why Meaning, Not Mining, Defines the Legacy of Jewellery.

One of the most common questions I get is:

“But will a lab-grown diamond last long enough to be an heirloom?”

It’s a fair question, but I believe we need to rethink what heirloom really means.

Because to me, an heirloom isn’t about how rare something is. It’s about how deeply it’s loved — and how far its story travels.

A Ring that’s Lasted Generations

This ring has been in my family for over 100 years:

It was handmade by my great-great-grandfather — forged in silver, set with lapis lazuli, and carried through wars, partition, and generations.

My grandfather once showed it to me and told me how it was one of the few things he brought when he moved from Chakwal (in undivided India) to
Delhi. I found it in his locker after he passed away — and I’ve kept it ever since.

It wouldn’t score high in resale value. But on the legacy scale? It’s priceless.

Legacy Brands Want You to Believe Otherwise.

Much of today’s diamond advertising tries to convince people that only mined diamonds are heirloom-worthy.

It’s clever storytelling — framing heirlooms as something earned through age, rarity, and resale value.

But here’s what that narrative quietly implies:

That if your family didn’t own expensive Jewellery, your legacy doesn’t count. That if your ancestors were refugees like mine, or didn’t have wealth, they had nothing worth passing down.

I don’t buy that. And if you come from humble beginnings, you shouldn’t either.

Because anything that lasts and carries love is heirloom-worthy.

Lab Grown Diamonds are Real. And Built to Last.

They’re chemically and optically identical to mined diamonds. They’re just as brilliant. Just as durable. And when created with care, they become just as emotionally powerful.

Final Thought:

The ring my great-great-grandfather made wouldn’t be considered “valuable” in any showroom. But in my family? It’s priceless.

Let’s stop measuring heirlooms by price. Let’s start measuring them by presence, purpose, and the stories they carry forward.

If you’ve ever inherited something simple but sacred — or created something in the hope it will outlast you — I’d love to hear your story.
